Meet Your Rookies

Meet Your Rookies

KIDS TEACHING KIDS

Two tech rookies, with a slick website wrapped around our content (thanks Mom) and an aerospace mentor (thanks Dad) to ensure we don’t kill/hurt ourselves on our way to becoming inventors. We’re Tripp and Garrett, and we’ve spent the past two years gathering ideas, research and experiences which our mom has photographed and encouraged us to write about. Uhg: but you should see our handwriting.

Our family has spent the past few years traveling to every Maker Faire within reach, and last year our parents helped our school launch its first science fair. It was exciting to show friends two robots we built and we loved learning about the projects of our classmates. Some of them were really gross. But in a good way…slime, bugs, lava. In Scouts we’ve also had the chance to help teach friends about the things we’ve learned, from ridiculously awesome (legal) pinewood derby hacks—observe the hardware, lower left—to rockets, simple machines and circuitry projects. Since our mom is a journalist and knows that anything worth reading is now online, she also encouraged us to make a website about all of the things we’ve been doing and care about. Now, we’re not pretending to be experienced web designers or even polished writers—we’ve had help making this thing look good, but we love nothing better than teaching people about the things we’ve tracked down on the internet and learned about through mentors. So, while the site isn’t finished just yet, (those link dead-ends are disappearing by the hour) we’d like to introduce you to rookies.tech, a website about kids teaching kids. After we get all of our own stuff up (video how-tos, photos with simple instructions, research links, great info and lists, awesome photos gallery slideshows) we’ll start asking you to share your stuff as well. So as you poke around our site, start thinking about what you like making, how you do it, why you do it, and tell us about it as you join our virtual maker-space.  –Tripp & Garrett
