ELON MUSK’S SPACEX
Elon Musk wants to send me to Mars! Well, maybe not me specifically, and maybe not just yet, but he recently made the most detailed announcement ever about his SpaceX program’s plans to populate Mars. He plans to send about 100 people at a time on his rocket ship, “Dragon,” that travels via a booster into space where it gets refueled and then uses solar panels to power the end of its journey. The trek should take about three months. Earth and Mars pass close enough to each other to make the trip every 26 months, so by his numbers that means it would take at least 40 years to build this Mars colony. Elon is 45 years old, so he’ll live to see some of this…but guess who’s young enough to really get in on this idea…11-year-old kids like me. It will take him years to bring down the costs and speed up the tech required to pull off this “Tony Stark” level idea, but if anyone seems ready to actually deliver on it, I’d say it’s this guy.
Elon has a pretty good track record. He did something called PayPal (which my parents and their friends seem to know about) and then Tesla…which I know ALL about. Cool, energy-efficient cars that look as good as they are for the environment. He also runs SolarCity which is also trying help slow global warming, an artificial intelligence company called OpenAI and has come up with the coolest transportation plan ever: the hyperloop. It involves capsules traveling through tubes on air cushions.
Many of these projects make use of the tech Elon has developed for SpaceX so we don’t have to wait for a Mars colony to think this guy can change the future–it’s all actually happening right now. He’s my candidate for coolest inventor ever (apologies to Steve Jobs and Leonardo da Vinci) which is why you’re seeing his face all of over the site.
